Spa and Hot Tub Wiring by Goodiel Electric.

Hot Tub Wiring by Goodiel Electric. As Florida’s Treasure Coast weather warms,  people are heading out to backyard pools, hot tubs and spas. When it comes to pool safety, drowning is the first concern that comes to mind; but another hidden danger to swimmers comes to mind: electrocution. There have been 60 deaths plus and many serious shocks reported over the past 13 years involving electrical hazards in and around swimming pools hot tubs and spas.   It is important that these systems be wired correctly to ensure safety in an environment with water.

Spa and hot tub wiring installations are not a simple process.  Variation exist in hot tub wiring requirements for similar products.  For instance,  hot tubs with mixed voltage components require 4-wire systems, which means they require an electrical circuit providing (2) hot wires, (1) neutral, and (1) ground wire. Other system require but three wires.  Because of the reactive loads that spa motors present along with the resistance load of heaters, and the fact that parts of the spa including ozonators may run on 120V, common GFCI breakers sometimes react to a normal spa condition as if it were a ground fault. They can be very unreliable.

A large portion of 240V spas manufactured today require a 50 amp 4-wire electrical service. Some hot tubs have load requirements of 30A or 40A, and a few even 60A

The best protection for families is inspection, detection, and correction of electrical hazards in and around swimming pools, hot tubs and spas.   It is important to have an electrician who is qualified in pool and spa repairs inspect and upgrade your pool, spa or hot tub in accordance with applicable local codes and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
